Prof. Dr. Bernd Sommer

Research Focus

In my research and teaching, I am dealing with the change of societal relations to nature as well as the possibilities of a socio-ecological transformation towards sustainability. This includes both basic research-oriented and theoretical-conceptual issues as well as questions relevant to praxis. This includes in particular the sociological elucidation of the dynamics and structural causes of the non-sustainability of modern societies. Empirically, a special focus lies on the climate crisis. Theoretically, process and figurational sociology founded by Norbert Elias serves as a central framework for my work. Other key interests are theories of social change and the radical right's relationship to nature.
