Prof. Dr. Bernd Sommer

Research Focus

In my research and teaching, I am dealing with the change of societal relations to nature as well as the possibilities of a socio-ecological transformation towards sustainability. This includes both basic research-oriented and theoretical-conceptual issues as well as questions relevant to praxis. Thus, my work aims at the sociological enlightenment of the dynamics and structural causes of the non-sustainability of modern societies. Empirically, a special focus lies on the climate crisis. Theoretically, process and figurational sociology founded by Norbert Elias serves as a central framework for my work. Other key interests include theories of social change, transformation conflicts, the far right's relationship to nature, as well as the environment-military nexus.
